The 1990s

23 pieces

The decade the game got its new clothes, seen mostly from the cheaper seats. Rangers chase nine in a row with Gascoigne and Laudrup, then meet the Advocaat revolution. Forest come down from Clough’s heights, and Blackpool hand Sam Allardyce his first job in English management. Third-tier Chesterfield take Middlesbrough to an FA Cup semi-final replay in 1997. Peter Reid, underrated as ever, gets the praise he’s due. There’s 1990’s great England debate too: Taylor, Venables, Kendall or Royle? John Barnes raps with New Order, and Paul Dickov’s goal in the 94th minute against Gillingham in 1999 stops Manchester City from falling further.
