Last day France Football released the much-awaited list of the 30 players who have a chance to win the prestigious individual award for the best men’s footballer of the year. The youngest player on the list is Barcelona’s talented midfielder, Pedri. Manchester City and Chelsea have the most number of players who are nominated. Five each from two clubs. All the media are preparing their prediction on who will be winning this year’s Ballon d’Or. The European journalists have already released their prediction on who are the favourites to win this year. The three primary names on everyone’s lists are Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski and Jorginho. Let’s see which player among the three deserves this year’s award. Football betting odds on who will win the award this year looks tight.

Last year the Ballon d’Or was cancelled due to the ramifications of the Covid-19 pandemic. Lewandowski would have won it without any competition from other players if it had happened in the previous year. It was the best year for him as he won the treble with Bayern Munich and the European Golden Boot as he was the top goal scorer last season. But this year it will be difficult for him to win it as the club could not repeat the success that they had in the previous year.

All three players have excelled in different ways. In the case of Messi, he won the Copa Del Rey with Barcelona and became the club’s and league’s top scorer. But in the league, the team had their worst performance. But he had a commendable individual performance. His chances got high when he won the Copa America with Argentina. It was his first major title with Argentina. He was also the best player and the top scorer in the tournament.

Jorginho had the best season with Chelsea and Italy. He won the Champions League title with Chelsea, and with Italy, he won the EURO Cup. He was a vital part of the midfield for both teams.

Lewandowski will undoubtedly be frustrated if he doesn’t win this year. Last year it was a golden chance for him, and he deserved it. But this year, the odds are not in favour. He scored 41 goals in just 29 matches in 2020-21 and won the league title.

Messi had the best overall performance last season, and also he continues his fine form. Jorginho has won two important titles for the club and the country. Lewandowski is the European top scorer.

So, in my opinion, the award should go to the player who had an overall performance. Most of the journalists, coaches, and captains of the national teams will vote for Messi to win his 7th Ballon d’Or.

Messi deserves it more than any other player this year. As Johan Cruyff predicted, Messi will finish his career with seven or eight Ballon d’Or awards.
