Football fans on the social media site Twitter have been today paying tribute to the late great manager Sir Bobby Robson on his birthday.

The legend of English football would have turned 86 today had he not sadly passed away from lung cancer in July 2009.

Robson enjoyed an incredible 54-year career in the professional game, so it’s no surprise to see an outpouring of tributes for him on what would have been his 86th birthday.

As a player, he represented the likes of Fulham, West Bromwich Albion and his national team England, before moving into management upon his retirement in 1968.

It was as a boss that he really made his name, leading Ipswich Town to FA Cup and UEFA Cup glory and nearly delivering a major tournament triumph to the Three Lions, as well as managing some of Europe’s elite clubs such as Barcelona, Porto, PSV and more notably, Newcastle United.
