Crumlin Star continue their perfect record: Intermediate League roundup

0

Another bumper week of Intermediate action this week, and Crumlin Star kept their 100% record intact as they moved into 3rd place in the NAFL table for the first time this season.

The reigning champions welcomed Ards Rangers to the Cricky and triumphed 3-0 as they continue to creep up the table now they catch up on the leading sides in games played. With current leaders Immaculata not in action, second placed Shankill Utd had the chance to cut the gap at the top to two points, however, they were held 1-1 by Ballynahinch Olympic at Kilmore PF. East Belfast dropped points in a rare home draw, as they shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw with Rathfriland at East Park.

Drumaness Mills recent good form was brought to a halt as they fell to a 3-1 defeat to Derriaghy CC, who jumped up to 11th place at the bottom of the table. Another relegation-threatened side, Crumlin Utd, also picked up an excellent win as they saw off 1st Bangor 3-0 at Mill Road. These results meant Albert Foundry dropped to second bottom, having lost 3-0 at Islandmagee. They now sit eight points above Downpatrick but have played four games more.

In Mid Ulster, leaders Hanover were in action as they welcomed Bourneview Mill to Brownstown Park. They duly got back to winning ways, seeing off their rivals 3-2, Justin Bradley (2) and Matthew Brown with the goals. With Crewe Utd in Marshall Cup action, Windmill Stars jumped above them into 3rd place thanks to their 3-1 home win over lowly St Marys.

The other sides in the bottom three also fell to defeats with Laurelvale losing by the odd goal in five at home to Ballymacash Rangers, while AFC Silverwood are cut adrift at the bottom, falling to a 5-0 defeat at Richhill AFC. Meanwhile, a six-goal thriller at Bignian Park saw Valley Rangers and Fivemiletown United share the spoils after a 3-3 draw.

The NI Intermediate League continues to take shape and Strabane Athletic continue to creep up the table. This week they travelled to reigning champions and league leaders Magherafelt Sky Blues and won 2-1 which moved them within three points of the Sky Blues having played four games less than their rivals.

This result also allowed Newbuildings Utd to leapfrog the Sky Blues as they made the short trip to Trojans, seeing off the hosts 2-1 to move onto 19 points. Another derby at Swilly stadium saw Maiden City take on Oxford Utd Stars, and the ‘home’ side for the day triumphed 1-0 against the bottom side to move into fourth place in the table. In the final game of the day, Dungiven welcomed Ardstraw to Ballyguddin and the visitors moved level on points with their hosts thanks to a 1-0 win.

The BPIL top four were all in cup action this week, and 5th place Newtowne failed to narrow the gap to them as they fell to a heavy 5-1 defeat at the hands of Brantwood at Skegoneill Avenue. Elsewhere, Donegal Celtic welcomed bottom side Cookstown RBL to Celtic Park, and secured a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Stephen Flanagan and Logan Brady.
