It’s been 20 years since Brazil took home the trophy at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, but the memories of that victory are still fresh in the minds of Brazilian football fans.
Indeed, there are many that are reflecting on them at the moment as the 2022 FIFA World Cup is around the corner, especially as the Selecao are touted to be the favorites to win the upcoming event in Qatar.
Many are already using the betting tips that have been made available for the premier competition to enhance their experiences and make their choices, with the South Americans among the top of the pile.
Back in 2002, and led by a young, talented squad that included the likes of Ronaldo, Rivaldo, and Ronaldinho, Brazil put on a dominating performance throughout the tournament, winning all seven of their matches and scoring an impressive 18 goals. In the final, they faced Germany, a team that had been unbeaten up to that point. But Brazil prevailed, winning 2-0 to claim their fifth World Cup title.
Everyone had already known how talented Ronaldo was, and how much of a threat he was when given an opportunity to shoot and he proved onlookers right as he managed to top the Golden Boot charts for the tournament. He scored a total of eight goals in seven matches, thus reigning supreme.
But it was not just Ronaldo who shone for Brazil in 2002. The entire team put on a magnificent display of football, breezing through their group with three wins and then dispatching Belgium (2-0), England (2-1), and Turkey (1-0) in the knockout rounds before finally meeting Germany in the final.
It was a tense match against a strong German side, but Ronaldo scored early in the 67th minute to break the deadlock. Then, just 10 minutes or so later, he sealed the victory with another goal to make it 2-0. With that, Brazil were crowned world champions once again.
However, it has been a feat that has since been failed to be replicated, despite all of the talent that the country has been able to call upon. Nonetheless, they have always managed to reach the quarterfinals or later in each major event.
Notwithstanding, Brazil’s 2002 FIFA World Cup victory is remembered as one of the greatest sporting moments in history, and one that many feel could be replicated some two decades on since it last happened.
Perhaps this is the competition where players like Neymar Jr are finally able to get their hands on the biggest prize the game has to offer.
