With the 26-year-old completing his much-anticipated move to Manchester United earlier this month, many would have been interested to see how Brendan Rodgers reinvested the £80m accrued from the sale of the England international.
However, the Northern Irishman opted to stick rather than twist with his defensive ranks and that decision appears vindicated after the performance of a certain Caglar Soyuncu over the weekend.
Being such an influential figure and a “leader” while at the club, It looked unlikely to get an equally dependable replacement as the 26-year-old.
After all, he currently is the world’s most expensive defender for a reason.
However, Caglar Soyuncu’s bullish performance proved Leicester City should not be worried about Harry Maguire’s exit to Manchester.
While the Turkish international may not be a household name, his humble background does show similar trends with that of the big centre back he’s replacing.
Soyuncu joined Freiburg from Altinordu in 2016 and went on to make 50 appearances for the Bundesliga side, scoring once.
The 23-year-old has made 15 appearances for Turkey after being called up in November 2015 by then-head coach Fatih Terim.
Amidst interest from Manchester City and Arsenal, Leicester City prised him away on deadline day last summer in a deal potentially up to £19m.
Of course with a certain Englishman at the club, there was no way for a then 22-year-old Soyuncu to force his way into the Leicester lineup.
With Maguire now out of the club, the stage is set perhaps for a new “leader” to emerge at the heart of Leicester’s defence.
The Foxes tried to buy a centre-back after selling the England international to United, but their £30 million bid for Burnley’s James Tarkowski was rejected and they had to stick with their current options.
However, Soyuncu’s domineering display alongside Evans showed the Foxes should not be too worried at their inability to sign a Maguire replacement.
His performance was so convincing he won the man of the match award and his centre-back partner, Jonny Evans, heaped a lot of praise on the Turkish international.
“I thought he was excellent, I thought he was man of the match and it was great to see.
“Everyone was worried about Harry leaving but Caglar has stepped in. I think if any of the lads step in… Wes (Morgan) is a hero here, Filip (Benkovic) has come back from on loan at Celtic and has built up a good reputation there.
“It’s great that Soyuncu has come in and I can help the young lads if I am playing alongside them.”
Harry Maguire was very influential in the side but Leicester would probably be feeling good about cashing in on the 26-year-old.
The future looks promising with Soyuncu and so far he has started out in the best possible way.
Leicester will be hoping to qualify for Europe this season and following the departure of Maguire saw their odds go out at many of the casinos and bookmakers following the English Premier League. However, with Leicester defence still looking solid with a clean sheet against Wolves, you might be able to take advantage of this gap in the market and use no deposit casino bonuses to cash in on potential Leicester success.
A positive start and some recognition from fellow teammates and the coach will go a long way in bracing the Turkish international to fill some heavy boots.
Leicester City could see themselves unearth yet another colossus at the back. Harry might be missed, but he’s all in the past and Soyuncu is the future.
