After 19 years of winning significant trophies, securing many record signings, and unforgettable moments, the Roman Abramovich Chelsea era is coming to an end. The Russian billionaire bought the London club in 2003 for an estimated £140 million, and under his leadership, the club went from “that West London club” to one of Europe’s fiercest sides.
With the Club World Cup win coming just months before he was forced to give up the club, the Russian billionaire ensured he won every available trophy with Chelsea. But to every start, there is an eventual end, and with the Roman era coming to an end, we look back at some of his best managerial signings.
Chelsea became a major European force under the Russian oligarch, winning many trophies in the process. Many punters also won several bets when backing Chelsea to win. Although the Abramovich era has ended, you can still win big betting on Chelsea and other teams. You don’t even need to be an expert on football to do this. A lehetőségek, amelyeket a fogadás élőben a labdarúgásra tartogat, végtelenek.
Best Chelsea Managers Of The Abramovich Era
The Roman Abramovich era of Chelsea ownership has come to an end. We look back at some of the best managers that served under him.
Jose Mourinho
The self-acclaimed Special One, Jose Mourinho is easily one of the greatest football managers ever. After doing the impossible with Porto by winning the UEFA Champions League, Roman Abramovich decided to make Jose Mourinho his first managerial signing with Chelsea.
It turned out to be a perfect decision, with the Portuguese tactician guiding Chelsea to their first domestic title in 50 years, breaking so many records in the process. He went to win the FA Cup, denying Manchester United a domestic double. The Chelsea vs. Man United fixture ended with a Didier Drogba goal as the sole difference.
Mourinho is credited with imbibing the winning mentality into Chelsea, and though it’s been years since his departure, his influence remains. Jose Mourinho had two spells at Chelsea – the first was from 2004 to 2007 and ended with the 59-year-old leaving on mutual content.
He returned to the club in 2014 and guided Chelsea to another Premier League title. In his second stint, he managed the club to the UCL semi-final, with the Chelsea vs. Atletico Madrid tie ending 1-3, in favor of the Spaniards.
He is the club’s most successful manager. Under his leadership, the Chelsea field produced the record for the longest unbeaten home run in Premier League history. The record still stands today.
Thomas Tuchel
A manager is loved for his actions on the pitch and his actions outside them. If there’s anything the Chelsea – Roman saga taught us, it’s that Thomas Tuchel is one of Chelsea’s greatest managers.
After the UK government sanctioned Abramovich and Chelsea, his coordination earned him massive respect and love from the club’s fans, making him one of the most loved Chelsea managers.
Aside from his terrific character off the pitch, the German is also a tactical genius. After leaving a super team at Paris Saint-German, he was handed the responsibility of taking over from a club legend in the middle of the season and restoring order to the team.
The former Dortmund gaffer found success immediately and managed to develop some form of cohesion in the team. He guided Chelsea to their second Champions League title in his first season. Chelsea dominated most of their oppositions, with Chelsea beating Atletico Madrid over two legs without conceding a goal.
In his first full season with the Blues, he won the Super Cup after beating Villarreal in the final. He became the first manager in Chelsea’s history to win a Club World Cup by defeating Brazilian powerhouse, Palmeiras in Abu Dhabi.
Although he lost two of those finals, he became the first manager in the club’s history to play in the final of the FA Cup, League Cup, and Champions League.
Carlo Ancelotti
After Luiz Scolari’s unsuccessful spell at the helm of the Blues, Abramovich needed a tactically sound manager backed by a proven record of success.
After weeks of searching, the Russian settled for Carlo Ancelotti. The Italian was charged with getting Chelsea back on track, and he did just that. By the end of his first season, Ancelotti’s Chelsea were crowned champions of England, and they did so in some style.
The Italian also engineered the club’s first-ever domestic double after defeating Portsmouth by a lone goal in the FA Cup final at Wembley. Ancelotti’s Chelsea played some of the best attacking football we have ever seen from the West London side.
Antonio Conte
Known for his attacking and defensive tactics, Conte was hired to overturn the mess of the failed Mourinho’s second project. After a shaky start, Conte turned things around and won the Premier League in his first season, breaking numerous records in the process.
He became the first manager in EPL history to win 30 of his team’s 38 league games – a record that Pep Guardiola later broke. His famous three at the back formation that allowed fullbacks supplement as attackers is still in effect at Chelsea today.
Roberto Di Matteo
Roberto Di Matteo might not have been the best in tactics and off-the-pitch presence, but Chelsea fans will forever remember him for giving them one of the most unforgettable nights in the club’s history.
After Chelsea sacked Andre Villa-Boas midseason, Roberto Di Matteo was tasked with seeing out the season. The club was on a poor league run and had little chance of winning any trophy that season. Under the former Chelsea player, the club won the FA Cup, eliminated Barcelona in a UCL semi-final fixture in Camp Nou, and went on to win Chelsea’s first-ever Champions League after defeating Bayern München at their home ground.
Final Notes
Roman Abramovich was known for being ruthless when it comes to managerial decisions. Fans were warned not to get attached to any particular manager, and Chelsea managers understood that they were only a bad run away from losing their job.
Although this system has been condemned by many, it has helped Chelsea become such a successful team, with the London side being the most successful English team in the last 20 years. For this, the fans of the club will be forever grateful.
